Comrade Steve,
Protein supplements are NOT needed in order to biuld muscle...And the super high protein diets are pushed by supplement dealers (wow, wonder why they would do that, I wonder if there is some sort of profit for them involved?!)
If you want to do an intresting test, go and look at all the supplement companies and see how much protein they tell you to take, then, go do some research on some world class nutritionists and dieticians, you will find that the people who have no profit in telling you to megadose on protein are very knowledgable and are the ones to follow for advice.
This does not mean you do not need protein, but it is far less than what you have been led to beleive by the bodybuilding hype machine. If you go to naturalstrength.com and go to the nutrition section, you will find articles on nutrition and protein by Nancy Clark...Listen to her, not to Muscletech, or eas, or any other garbage company out there.
Most of the respected experts on nutrition recommend 1 gram of protein per pound of lean weight, without fat mass. This is what I follow and has helped me gain immensley. And to give you an idea of how you can get enough protein without supplements, just listen to "Maximum" Bob Whelan..."If you drink 1 gallon of skim milk and eat 2 cans of tuna in addition to your 3 meals, not only will you get enough protein, you will be pissing out enough to fill the needs of a 3rd world country"...Nuff said!
