Stay away from refined sugar; it's are at the top of the list of "use sparingly" (Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy) along with white bread, white rice, potatoes, white pasta, soda, and sweets (to include that chocolate syrup & ice cream). Something with that much sugar will create an insulin spike bigger that the tidal wave that hit India last December - bad for weight gain, and you'll go from sugar high to sugar low in no time.
According to the book, the best calories (for carbs) come from whole grains because they're released over a period of time (slow-digested) and don't all-at-once hit your system.
Nuts are also great (particularly almonds). Nuts are generally about 50% fat calories (goes for nut butters, too) and are gonna be better for you than that ice cream because it won't create an insulin spike from the fat (try to stay away from processed nuts like honey roasted peanuts).
To go along with Boppi, the Smucker's Natural PB is great (can be found at Walmart); I will never again eat Jif or Peter Pan (both have hydrogenated oils, which are bad). I love PB, but like to mix it up - I recently went to a Whole Foods and bought freshly ground PB, soy nut butter, almond butter, and honey-sweetened PB from Arrowhead Mills (very good stuff).
