MessageInteresting question.
I can say that I encountered at the back of many military campaigns the logistics as crucial factor to victory or defeat. (Big) harbors, railroads, rivers, depots form key's to successfull operating a large army.
For instance the truckdrivers after D-day formed for a long time a key to the fighting achievements of the invasion forces after D-Day. Driving like mad men day after day because there were no 'normal' means of transportation at the time.
I think the invading armies in the Roman era had to live from plundering the depots/live stock available in the countries they conquered?
