I've been reading Al Sears' book, and I've got a question for you guys -
There's a farm about an hour away from here that, via some odd contrivance, offers raw, organic milk. They get a bit upwards of $4.00 per gallon.
And....
There's another farm around locally here that offers raw milk, but it's not organic. The guy says he doesn't use rBGH, and that he tries to avoid antibiotics. He does, however, buy commercial feed. His raw, but not organic, milk goes for about $2.50 per gallon (or so).
And...
The local store sells organic, pasteurized milk for around $5.00 per gallon.
The first farm is obviously a good choice, but 120 miles worth of driving with current gas prices adds significantly to the price. The second farm is 30 miles away, but I could get it when I go visit some friends of mine that live in the same area, so gas cost ceases to be a factor. The $5.00 per gallon is available at the grocery store I go to anyway.
What I'm wondering is, should I be worried enough about the potential antibiotics and the grain diet that I should go out of my way (and pay the gas prices!) to get the $4.00/gallon milk, should I get the $5.00/gallon organic pasteurized milk locally (way cheaper on gas), or should I not worry about it and get the non-organic raw milk that's less expensive?
Put a little differently, if you could have organic OR raw milk, but not both, which would be the better choice, health-wise? Or is it critical to have both?
I currently drink rBGH-free pasteurized, homogenized milk. I'd think almost anything would be an upgrade from that.
Opinions? Comments?
Any info you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated.
