Messagemy understanding is slightly different still. it sounds like your case may not be this extreme; but it's my understanding that the biggest calorie hog in your body is your brain. your brain can't operate on protein. it needs glucose, which comes from carbs. if you are not eating carbs, you liver can convert protein to glucose with some effort. in the process it creates urea, which is toxic. urea is powder-like and your body requires water to flush it out. if necessary, you will become dehydrated to flush it from your system. this is why so many on atkins/south beach loose lots of weight only to put it back on when they start eating carbs again. they lose water without carbs and their body sucks it back up when they eat carbs again. full and fair disclosure; i picked this up a long time ago from a guy who got famous from pushing aerobics named Covert Bailey--author of Fit or Fat. I think history has proven much of his exercise advice mis-guided; but he had either his masters or his doctorate in nutrition from MIT. not an idiot....as Bruce Lee said "absorb what is usefull. Discard what is useless."
