I always make sure my pre-workout stuff is lowfat, moderate carb high protein - but thats just me.
A big meal after is fine, but it takes a while for your body to digest whole food and get all those building blocks to the muscles. It is regarded that this is the one time supplements are better than whole food because they are more easily broken down.
If it were me, I'd drink a protein shake (w/ water) and about 20oz gatorade immediately after, and then a big meal about an hour/hour & 30 min later.
But if whole food is all you've got, than work with it. Plenty of guys got big before protein powder and gatorade.
Make sure to eat alot throughout the day as well.
