"Up until the late nineties, cows at factory farms were routinely feed...parts of other cows mixed with the corn they have not evolved to digest. With the discovery of Mad Cow Disease, this was outlawed.......except for blood and fat."
The only part of this statement I did not know was "except for blood and fat." And if I'm reading that correctly, it is still legal to put cow fat and blood into cattle feed? If that is so, that is absurd.
I understand forcing the cattle to eat cattle is against the law, but I believe it still goes on. The FDA in this country is a joke. It has two reasons for existing- to protect the consumer and to promote industry- which seem to be at odds with each other. They lobby AGAINST testing all cattle slaughtered in this country for mad cow (Japan and other industrialized nations test all of their cattle). Other industrialized countries won't import our meat or produce, for a litany of reasons, fear of mad cow being one of them.
And factory farmers, with all do respect, are not "real" farmers. No connection/love/respect for the land, produce, or animals. They are corporate employees who's employers have an extreme devotion to the bottom line, at the cost of ecological sustainability and the health of their customers.
This next part may just be fantasy on my part, but I BELIEVE that it would never dawn on a small family farmer to feed a cow cow because its abhorrent to nature. They might feed a cow other types of grains (like corn or oats), but feeding a stict herbivore meat would not even cross their minds.
I don't know if this statement is true or not, but I was told in school that roadkill is collected and sold to the companies that make cattle feed. I don't believe something just b/c I read it in a textbook or my teacher said it, but it is something to take pause and think about.
I was saying I felt dumb b/c I have these strong fealings about my food, what it eats, and how its treated, but was intellectually lazy enough not to really educate myself on all of the issues germane to my ideals. Again, thanks for informing me. I have heard of that book before, and will pick it up next week sometime. I'll buy it through you're website b/c you have already done me a service for free on this forum (educating me, before about grass fed vs grass finished, and in this post, free range vs pasture raised... I had no idea, and all I can say is marketing is a bitch). Do you have any other suggested reading on diet (or training for that matter, other than whats on your website)? I love to read. Lemme know, and again, thanks.
As for the argentinian beef, I live just outside on NYC, but hang out in Manhattan alot. I have heard about this chuscarria-style restaurant that serves only argentian beef. Its $25 for a plate is all you can eat- for those who don't know, a waiter walks around with different cuts of beef and you take what you want when it comes by. Unlike a normal chuscaria, however, it is an Argentian restaurant and not Brazilian. So I wonder if the restaurant would get a pass... but I am assuming that from now on I cannot just assume things about the food I eat, and the research will just have to be done.
The force runs strong in me ;)
