I feel your pain man. Smoking is the devil. Even more so for health nuts or people who want to be high performance athletes. Someone mentioned Allen Car (sp?). I read one of his books but can't remember the title for the life of me. Anyways, it was very very good. Near the end though he says if you aren't prepared to quit, don't finish the book. So yeah, I never made the choice to butt out for good but I will.
I have no idea about what TurdFerguson is saying. I know there are a few new studies that link smoking to a decreased chance of Alzheimers. Nicotine has also succesfully been used as a short term treatment for Alzheimers with some positive results (increased mental clarity). But ummm. Ya, I think I may have read one or two studies linking smoking to heart disease, lung cancer, emphyzema, hypoxia, and what's the name of that other one... oh ya.. DEATH! Not trying to rag on TurdFerguson but you know.
I remember having the pooh scared out of me after looking up smoking in Guyton's Textbook of Medical Physiology. He says heavy smoking results in the death of avioli in the lungs and creates a permanent state of hypoxia (oxygen deprivation) that is irreversible. This doesn't mean every cigarette you smoke takes x ammount off your life or whatever they used to tell you in school but it DOES mean that someone who smokes heavily for an extended period is permanently altering their body. He does mention however that this can be offset by strengthening the diaphram and other muscles associated with breathing, so an ex-smoker can recover a great deal of their lung capacity but not all of it. Keep in mind to that this was published in like '76 or something. Freaked me out so bad I had to go outside and have a smoke.
But yeah for anyone who reads this rant: if you are a smoker and haven't smoked for long (ie. you believe you could quit at anytime but just enjoy it), just quit immediately and don't look back. Don't even go through the whole thing about "I can stop anytime I have WILLPOWER, people who think they are addicted are just weak". Just stop and don't let yourself question the decision in any way.
