Phase I liver detoxification enzymes convert carcinogens in cigarette smoke into more reactive compounds so that they can be bound in phase II liver detoxification (conjugation) and expelled from the body.
The problem is that the higly reactive compounds created by phase I detox, if not removed by phase II, are far more damaging to the health. It is thought that these transitional molecules (mutagens) are the main cause of the cancer from smoking.
Turmeric inhibits Phase I and stimulates phase II leading to lower levels of mutagens in the urine - those comparable to nonsmokers' levels. Turmeric itself has also been shown to inhibit cancer cell formation and growth as well.
For these reasons eating turmeric in yellow curries, stirred into a glass of water, or taken in capsule form, has been recommended for people who smoke and work in bars or other smoky environments. 1 - 1.5g/day
Oh yeah, 500mg of vitamin C, 200 IU of vitamin E, and eating cabbage, brocoli, cauliflower, or brussel's sprouts, 3 times/week are also very beneficial to promoting liver detox and general health - even if you're not a smoker.
