There is a lot to know and, in my opinion, a lot of advice to ignore about sleep apnea. I have it although I am certainly not overweight, and was recommended to use a CPAP machine after a sleep study, but I have found other ways to deal with it successfully. In my case, a different pillow and sleeping on my side more because my particular OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) is highly dependent on position.
In addition, I have found my apnea gets worse if I'm very tired, so I will actually have a cup of coffee before bedtime if I'm feeling really exhausted - it helps me sleep better. Read studies on the use of caffeine for treating OSA-like symptoms in premature infants.
There is also now an OTC dental appliance available at http://www.puresleep.com - dental appliances work well for some people, and have been available through dentists for a number of years at a much greater cost. Disclaimer - I haven't tried any dental appliance myself.
Certainly, if you are overweight, drop the weight as the first step.
