Hey everyone, just curious, how many people on here suffer back problems or are impeded in their training by back pain? I'm curious how common this is. I'm always interested in learning methods of stretching and pain relief and here are two things I was shown by a PT that help me. If anyone has other methods, please share them :)
1) Thoracic mobility?
Saw this on a DJM page and it works well. Basically you take 2 tennis balls and tape them together. Lay on the ground with the tennis balls positioned at about the mid-point of the back, one on either side of the spine. Do 5-6 "crunch-type" motions (this pushes the balls into the back) then roll the tennis balls up to the next vertebrae and repeat. The webpage made a point to recomend this NOT be done on the lower back. I'm unclear as to why but best be safe I suppose. I also found sometimes instead of a "crunch" motion you can sort of "snake" your back, wiggling to either side and slowly move down until you hit every point from the mid-back to the neck.
2) Lying on a pool noodle
A pool noodle is more or less a giant styrofoam snake. Alternatively, you can also take a large blanket and very tightly roll it into a cylinder. Now you want to lay ontop of this thing and have it running the length of your spine. Just lay on it for 5-10 minutes. Then roll it out, and lay normally against the floor and your back should just be super-relaxed and hopefully pain free.
